Dating back to the earliest incarnations of hip-hop and rap music, being branded has always been a must, whether it be the clothes you wear, the car you drive or even the food you eat. Cristal, Mercedes-Benz, Gucci, Patron and Versace are some common tropes found in hip-hop rhymes and part of the rap culture. But there is one brand that is less likely to be mentioned thinking about hiphop brand name-drops. Enter Grey Poupon, a Dijon mustard for the rich and object of some legendary commercials that are part of the collective memory. Due in part of the famous question – which has embedded itself into the American lexicon – “Excuse me, do you have any Grey Poupon?” and it’s easy to rhyme with status, the white wine-based mustard has been referenced in more than 100 songs. Many of rap’s biggest stars allude to their newfound wealth, using Grey Poupon as a status symbol of sorts. As time passed, hip-hop’s love affair with the famous mustard is as strong as ever.
