Robert Mapplethorp became world famous for his iconic black and white photography of flowers, black man and celebrities, but if you know this fabulous artist better (by reading the book ‘Just kids’ Patty Smith wrote about their relation) you are aware of the fact that he also made jewellery in his early career. Eclectic, bohemian jewels, he handcrafted with all kinds of found and collected colourful beads, feathers and other artefacts. It was part of his style and they are kept in an archive of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.
Recently Italian luxury jewelry house Repossi got the privilege to stroll through this collection and create a new eight-piece collection inspired by the photographer’s handmade pieces. Designed by Gaia Repossi with prices ranging from $2,000 to $258,000. The collection aligns with one of six themes based on key elements of the designs, including Relic Claw, Triptych Heart, Americana Flag, Chain, Mechanic, and Jetty. Like Mapplethorpe’s creations, Repossi’s emulative collection is also made by hand—following the tradition of Repossi’s excellence. The collection has been shortly available exclusively through Dover Street Market locations in New York (May 2021), later the collection was brought to DSM stores in Los Angeles (July 2021) and it’s London shop (August 2021). It will also be available at Repossi’s Paris flagship store.
Good to know, another seven pieces, considered a second act to the collection, will be unveiled next year.
