Sofia Crespo is a Berlin-based digital artist that uses machine learning techniques to create unnatural images of nature. In this series of works she explores a “Neural Zoo. She is an artist working with a huge interest in biology-inspired technologies. Crespo looks at the similarities between techniques of AI image formation, and the way that humans express themselves creatively and cognitively recognize their world. Her clear & focused fascination of shapes, colors and forms found in nature, results in a series of mind blowing fantasy images that force our brain to reflect towards nature in entirely new ways.
As Crespo’s work brings into question the potential of AI in artistic practice and its ability to reshape our understandings of creativity, I found it extremely interesting to monitor what will become the role of the artists working with machine learning techniques and how this will evolve in time. At The Eindhoven Design Academy students are working for some years on AI and robot created art, in order to start the debate and reflect on the future of the artist.
