We all feel it when we observe the latest Men Fashion Weeks in Milan, Paris and London: the gender barriers are coming down at a rapid pace. As from this summer, experimental but established designers like Rick Owens and Murielle Victorine Scherre are adapting their women’s (one piece) swimwear to male customers. Among others Owens & Scherre reinvisioned their swimwear collections to accentuate the male body in a way that the distinction between feminine en masculine becomes almost inseparable. The blurring of gender lines comes with amazing new possibilities for men to discover new items, which were previously kept out of reach.
The important question stays: The future of mens swimwear, is it culture or is it a choice? One we can only hope that more people will be flexible enough to embrace the further emancipation of menswear, and mens-swimwear in particular.
